So impressed with the students projects. They used their mathematical strategies to carefully create their projects. Take a look! After finishing our whole class novel, Windcatcher by Avi, we took a trip to The Thimble Islands. Since, the setting of the novel takes place here, it was a wonderful way for the children to connect to the characters in the story. Dear Fourth Graders and Parents,
Welcome to fourth grade! I am so happy you are in my class this year at Korn Elementary School! I can't wait to meet you! I hope you are excited to begin fourth grade because this will be a fun, fabulous and fascinating year of learning! Throughout the year, we will strengthen and expand our skills as readers, writers and mathematical problem-solvers as we tackle new concepts and challenges in all academic areas. We will read, discuss and write about intriguing new topics to refine and improve our literacy skills. In social studies, we will learn about Connecticut government, study the regions of the United States and explore Colonial Times. Get ready to stretch your marvelous math skills as we delve even more deeply into place value, multiplication, division, fractions, estimation, geometry and more! Science experiments involving rocks and minerals, magnetism, electricity and Forest ecosystems will light up your mind and imagination. These are just a few of the interesting and captivating experiences awaiting you in the year ahead! I am looking forward to the first day of school on Thursday, August 27, 2015. Please remember to bring your enthusiasm for learning, a positive attitude, sense of humor, caring heart and willingness to work hard. With these qualities in place, we can accomplish fantastic feats in fourth grade! I can’t wait to get started! Your excited fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Kilroy Special Date: Wednesday, August 26th, 2015 there will be a Meet and Greet. Please visit Korn School 8:30 am -10:00 am and come to room 11. Open House will be on Tuesday, September 15th, 2015 6:00. This past friday, May 15, 2015 ,we had the opportunity to visit Plymouth Plantation. 1. When we a arrived we were amazed and suddenly transported to the year 1624. 2. The houses, tools and the animals were replicas of what the pilgrims made and brought to the new world. 3. There were docents always stayed in character and gave us plenty of information. 4. Did you know that Plymouth Rock has 1620 carved on it? 5. Leo the husband (formally known as Leo the Miller) guided us around downtown Plymouth. 6. Leo showed us statues of Massasoit and William Bradford. 7. Leo was able to portray to share is knowledge about what life was like then and he made it so interesting that we have been talking about since we left! 8. We learned how a gristmill works at the Jenny Gristmill. 9. We enjoyed and completed a scavenger hunt of paintings and artifacts at the Pilgrim's Hall Musuem. 10. PLYMOUTH ROCKS! Last Tuesday, we had a visitor from the Eli Whitney Museum come to our school to create Electric City Houses. Before we went to Eli Witney we had to do mini science experiments to now what electricity is. First you need the following materials, 2 light bulbs, 2 wires, 4 screw eyes, 2 batteries, 2 paperclips (switch) and 2 tacks and 2 pieces of foil. On thing we learned about were conductors and insulators. A conductor allows electricity to flow through and a conductor keeps water out and keeps you safe from electricity. The most important thing we learned was what a circuit is. A circuit is made to be in a loop (circle) and is connected. All the wires need to be in a circuit in order for the lightbulb to light. We enjoyed this very much! It was a great way to apply what we have been learning about electricity in class. Before we went to Eli Witney we had to do mini science experiments to now what electricity is. Yesterday, was the beginning of a whole new discovery!! Mrs. Martin reviewed the components of ecosystems, including biotic and abiotic features, to prepare our classroom for the delivery of our self-sustaining aquaponic ecosystem. To create a ecosystem, we discussed the importance of a balanced food chain.
Here are some of our questions and thoughts about this upcoming unit: What do fish need to live? How many plants can you have on top of the tank? How many fish will be in the tank? How much water will be in the tank? What chemicals are in the air and water? What will the water temperature be? |
